4 Investigating Strategies, Tools, and Resources
This chapter outlines a variety of strategies, tools, and resources that system
and school leaders may find helpful as they work to promote positive behaviour, address inappropriate behaviour, and build and sustain a caring and safe learning environment.
STRATEGIES TO PROMOTE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR
Direct Teaching of Social Skills
▪ Helping students learn how to get along with others is a key strategy in building a caring and safe school culture. While many students come to school with some social skills already in place, most students benefit from direct teaching of appro- priate social skills, such as thinking before acting, listening, establishing and main- taining relationships, dealing with feelings, accepting consequences, and dealing with peer pressure.
Consistent modelling, teaching, and reinforcement of positive social skills is
an important part of successfully encouraging positive social behaviour among students, helping to enhance students’ self-control, respect for the rights of others, and sense of responsibility for their own actions.
